From the recording American Pride
Lyrics
Dropped a load of freight in Omaha
Headed straight down 44.
Had a pick-up time in Arkansas, so my foot was on the floor
Then I saw a flashing road sign that said the bridge was gone
The detour pointed left and right, that's where I went wrong
I tried to go across the mountain top to cut out fifty miles
It was a steady climb on a winding road, but my rig was doing fine
Then I saw a faded billboard that said you'd best beware
There's danger on the mountain and evil in the air
I had heard the tales when I was young about a place called Devil's Pride
Where evil creatures roamed the night, but I was not the scaring kind
I pushed ahead despite the thoughts that echoed in my mind
Hadn't seen a church in fifteen years, and I had done a little time
Suddenly, the moon was gone, and fog was on the rise.
I could barely see my headlights, but I could clearly see those eyes
Now the wind began to call my name, and the trees began to howl
As I looked into his lifeless eyes, I could almost see him smile
And although I'm not religious, I began to pray
Cause I could feel that demon reach inside and try to steal my soul away, I said
Get me off this mountain, I don't want to die
I must make peace with you, Lord. I have seen the devil’s eyes
Let me see the morning, I have seen the light
Get me off this mountain, get me off tonight
I hit low gear, and I kicked that rig, and I laid him on the grass
When I looked into my mirror, I could see the lightning flash
But I knew I only ticked him off cause I heard the devil cry
You'd better put your head between your legs, boy, and kiss it all goodbye
Now there were flying pigs and old big rigs and ghosts of every kind
Hurricane winds a blowing a band of demons keeping time.
When it looked like it was over, I sang those words again
And looked into the heavens and found my long-lost friend, I said
I said, Get me off this mountain. I don't want to die
I must make peace with you, Lord. I have seen the devil’s eyes
Let me see the morning, I have seen the light
Get me off this mountain, get me off tonight
Well, I made it off the mountain thanks to my new best friend
But the devil’s always waiting around the mountain’s bend
So, if you see a detour, take this advice from me
Don’t go across the mountain unless Jesus has your keys
